Established in 1999, Matetic is owned and operated by Jorge and Cristian Matetic. The biodynamically farmed, certified organic vineyards are located in Rosario Valley, a subdivision of San Antonio Valley. There are two distinct types of soil in the valley – on the hillsides the soil is red-brick in color, thin, with a superficial layer of clay and decomposed granite below. On the valley floor, the soil composition has a deeper layer of granite, red clay on top over a layer of darker colored soil. The fruit is hand-picked and estate bottled. Winemaker Paula Cardena Saez began as an assistant for Errazuriz and William Cole Vineyards. She is assisted by winemaker Julio Bastias and consultant Ken Bernards.
Tasting notes
Aromas of mango and lychee, with apple custard, papaya and lime peel, mixed in with herbal notes and green chili. The palate is concentrated, fruity and fresh, dominated by a persistent mineral overtone.
Technical notes
The grapes were harvested from Valle Hermoso, located eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, where the vineyards are planted to granite matrix. The berries were hand-picked, destemmed, cold macerated, and pressed under a layer of inert gas to preserve fresh fruit flavors and acidity. Fermented in stainless steel, the wine was aged for seven months on its fine lees with periodic battonage in oak barrels and stainless steel tanks.
