In 1984, Gianni Masciarelli created his most ambitious wine: Villa Gemma Montepulciano D’Abbruzzo. For the occasion he introduced modern winemaking practices and allowed his wine to age for a long period in barriques, which was not common at the time. He chose the best grapes from his vineyard at San Martino sulla Marrucina, which he believed was one of the best 50 crus in the world, resulting in a wine which is still today considered one of the best in Italy and is the only wine to have achieved the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from the Gambero Rosso ten consecutive times.
