Wine Advocate 92 points - The 2011 Riesling is a more earthy, savory style of Riesling giving herbal and crushed stone notes over hints of apple, fresh pears and bread. Light-bodied and crisp in the mouth, it has a great core of apple and pear flavors with a detectable touch of residual sugar (19 grams per liter) and a very long finish. Approachable now, it should cellar to 2020+.  (Aug 2012)

Wine Enthusiast 92 points - This is a cask-reared, slightly off-dry Riesling fermented with indigenous yeasts that’s like no other Aussie Riesling. Some funky mushroomy, umami-like notes accent ripe apple and nectarine flavors, and then a squirt of lime follows on the bright, lengthy finish. Despite its relatively low alcohol, the wine is richly textured and possesses ample weight on the palate. (Sep 2013)

Established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam, Frankland Estate is a family owned and operated winery located in the Frankland River district, a cool climate region situated 124 miles inland from the Southwest coast of Western Australia. Isolation Ridge Vineyard sits within the family’s 3,000 acre property on which the family has run their sheep and wool growing enterprise since 1974. Their 74 acre vineyard was planted in 1988 to regional soils (aka coffee rock) of ironstone and limonite cemented sand. The vines slowly mature over long dry summers and cold wet winters, are dry farmed and yields are kept low. Winemaker Judi Cullam is assisted by her children, viticulturalist Elizabeth Smith and operational manager, Hunter Smith. Isolation Ridge was certified organic by ACO (Australian Certified Organics) and the fruit for Rocky Gully wines and the single vineyard Rieslings is sourced from locally certified organic growers...

Frankland Estate was established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam who continue to be actively involved in every aspect of the vineyard and winery. They are now assisted by their daughter Elizabeth Smith, son Hunter Smith and a small, hardworking team who enjoy the diverse and idiosyncratic challenges associated with working in a family business. The Isolation Ridge vineyard lies on part of a farm where the family have run a wool growing enterprise since 1974. The decision to diversify their farming interests was inspired and informed by a tour of French vineyards Barrie and Judi undertook in 1985 and also by two vintages they worked at Chateau Senejac in Bordeaux. The winemaking philosophies at Frankland Estate reflect these influences as well as the hard-earned lessons gained from some 17 vintages in the Frankland River region. Our approach to winemaking is based on the principle that the most significant characteristics of a wine come from the soil and the vineyard environment. We aim to make wines that reflect nature rather than the hand of the winemaker. This is the basis of our commitment to sustainable farming and to working the land in accord with the cycles of nature. We carefully nurture the health of the soils in our vineyard and only take from our vineyards as much as can be replaced by natural processes. Our use of viticultural practices will result in us gaining organic certification in 2009 but is already evident in the complexity, depth and intensity of flavour in our wines.
