3 day lead-time required to confirm availability Why?

Founded in 1991, Felton Road is located in the Bannockburn appellation of Central Otago, New Zealand, the world’s most southerly wine growing region. Its inaugural vintage, 1997 was met with immediate critical acclaim and the winery has continued to build its reputation as a premier producer of balanced, elegant wines. Owner Nigel Greening and winemaker Blair Walter employ sustainable practices throughout the estate. The Elms, Cornish Point an Calvert Vineyards are farmed biodynamically. All 79 acres are meticulously farmed - shoot thinning, shoot positioning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning and harvest are all carried out by hand. Cover crops are planted between rows to assist in vine balance and to improve soil health and general biodiversity. Blair’s experience in Oregon and Burgundy form the core of his winemaking philosophy his hands-off approach incorporates gravity flow and he relies solely on wild yeasts. Only estate fruit is used. No additions or adjustments, including fining or filtration are avoided unless absolutely necessary and the wines age in French oak barrels made by artisanal Burgundian coopers. The Pinot Noirs are fermented with partial whole clusters and vinified in a traditional manner with moderately long macerations on their skins without pump overs. These wines reflect character of place and show that elegance and finesse are wholly compatible with the notions of concentration and complexity.

Tasting notes
A Pinot with both richness and tannic structure, its backbone of minerality and intense purity of fruit lend elegance. Lifted acidity adds verve to the long and persistent finish.

Wine Advocate 91 points (Oct 2013)
Medium to deep ruby-purple in color, the 2012 Calvert Pinot Noir flaunts a perfumed nose of lavender and rose petals over a core of kirsch, mulberries and dried Provence herbs, plus a whiff of underbrush. Medium-bodied and tightly knit, it has exciting vibrancy in the mouth at this youthful stage with a medium level of grainy tannins and refreshing acid to support, finishing with great persistence. Drink it 2014 to 2020+.

Rich and complex, opening with a core of ripe, juicy black cherry and blackberry flavors, revealing layers of lavender, clove, cinnamon, black tea, white pepper and truffle details. Graceful and elegant, delivering a plush texture and a finish that doesnít quit. Drink now through 2028.óM.W.

Technical notes
Calvert is located half a mile north of Elms. Here, the slopes are even and gentle, so soil composition is quite consistent. The Pinot Noir parcels within Calvert were planted in two phases: in 1999, Lodge block was planted with clones UCD5, UCD6, AM10/5 and B115; the Arurum, Willows and Springs parcels were planted in 2001 with clones B667, B777 and B115. The fruit (25% whole cluster) fermented in open-top fermentors and aged for 13 months in French oak barrels. The 2012 Calvert is darker and more masculine than in years past.
