Mossback Pinot Noir Russian River 2012

Mossback Pinot Noir Russian River 750ml 2012
Sku: 1865370

3 day lead-time required to confirm availability Why?

Owners John and Lane Giguiere have been growing grapes and making wine for more than 25 years in the Dunnigan Hills of California. After selling their family’s company, R.H. Philips, they started a new venture in 2005 and named it Crew, in honor of the many staff members who left Phillips to join Crew. Mossback is an old fashioned term for farmer, which references the Giguiere’s long family history of farming, as well as the moss covered rocks, tree trunks and end posts prevalent in the cool Russian River Valley of California. Dan Cederquist is the winemaker and Lacey Steffy is the co-winemaker. Please note that this is sold as a combo pack: 750/12 + 1.5L/1.

Tasting notes
The wine was aged for nine months in French oak, and presents aromas of clove and nutmeg, fresh earth and dried cranberries. Flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry and barrel spice are balanced by undertones of wild mushrooms, vanilla and cocoa.

Wine Advocate 88 points (Nov 2014)
Slightly better than the Central Coast Pinot is the 2012 Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley, a blend of 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Petit Verdot aged eight months in French oak. Copious notes of damp earth, forest floor, Asian soy and plum sauce interwoven with black cherries and briery fruit are attractive, medium-bodied and finish with good density as well as length. This supple, luscious Pinot Noir should drink nicely for 2-3 years.

Technical notes
(95% Pinot Noir/5% Petit Verdot). Pinot Noir sourced from the Russian River Valley adds bright red fruit, spice and balanced acidity while estate Petit Verdot lends depth and concentration. The handharvested fruit was destemmed, fermented in small open-top fermentors and pumped over several times per day for richness and mouthfeel.
