Domaine Ostertag Riesling Fronholz 2011

Domaine Ostertag Riesling Fronholz 750ml 2011

Tasting notes
This is a classical expression of a great terroir Riesling: refined, frank, elegant. The Fronholz has the specificity of giving a salty finish to the wines, whatever the grape is, due to the numerous mineral salts in its soil. This mouth-watering salinity makes it a great wine to pair with a large range of food.

Pineapple, muskmelon and grapefruit with invigorating bite and piquancy from their core and rinds mark an Ostertag 2011 Riesling Fronholz that’s full-bodied but animated. Toasted almond, fresh ginger, caraway and white pepper add invigorating complexity en route to a finish of prodigious sheer persistence and generous primary juiciness, if also a faint hint of warmth (albeit from slightly less than 14% alcohol). I would plan to follow this through at least 2018. (The corresponding Heissenberg was still fermenting early last year and I have not had a chance to taste it since it stopped. But I have little doubt that its vibrancy and its intense citrus zest glow will have been matched by admirable clarity.)

Wine maker notes
The FRONHOLZ is a very special piece of land with great personality! Its location, as a hill apart from the main Vosges hill range, on the top and South-West facing side of the Epfig hill, makes it special. This is a very rare exposure for vines in Alsace, the whole vineyard being on the East-facing slopes of the Vosges foothills. As a result, there is a better photosynthesis, preserved acidity and aromas that are never overripe or exotic due to an intense and prolonged sunlight at the end of the day, and a very good air flow. These climatic particularites allow to produce a rich though very dry, sharp and mineral Riesling. The Riesling is planted on the top, south-facing part of the hill, on soils of white sands and quartz stones in the upper layer, and clay deeper down. The vines are farmed using biodynamic principles, as is all the domaine’s vineyard since 1998.

Food pairing
Food pairing: shell fishes, fishes (especially oily fishes), poultry, white meats and cheeses. Aging potential: 15 years.
