The Adelsheim 2012 Pinot Blanc Bryan Creek Vineyard is more successful than its Auxerrois counterpart from Ribbon Springs thanks to more efficacious acidity, driving a longer finish; but also more successful than the corresponding 2011 Pinot Blanc thanks to that acidity not being so obviously green-apple influenced. Positive piquancy of apple pip and chew of skin are embedded within a brightly juicy and refreshing context, with hints of toasted nuts and white pepper aiding in the invigoration and sheer extension of the finish. While the subtle creaminess of which this cepage is naturally capable (and here it enjoys a small share of barrel elevage as well as) isn’t in evidence now, I would feel free to follow this for at least another 18 months during the course of which I may well gain textural allure or complexity.

One of the finer Pinot Blancs from Oregon, this vineyard-designate has a lighter mouthfeel than the winery’s Pinot Gris, yet in some ways shows more complexity and overall appeal. Fresh fruit flavors of apple and melon carry a touch of almond. The bracing minerality extends through the finish. - Editor’s Choice

Wine maker notes
Esteemed in Friuli and Alto Adige, tolerated in Alsace, and abused in California, Pinot blanc has found an important home in Oregon. The same climate and soils that have made this state famous for Pinot noir and Pinot gris also work for their sibling Pinot blanc, giving us wines that are racy, yet bold in character. By the 1970s in California, producers found that they had no true Pinot blanc in the state, so David Adelsheim led a program to import two clones directly from Alsace to Oregon. Thus, we were in on the ground floor with this variety 1989 was our first vintage.
