Wine Advocate 87 points - The 2011 Klima red is a blend of 60% Kotsifali (aged for 12 months in two-year old French barrels) and 40% Merlot (aged for 12 months in new French oak). On opening, you will not have to worry about what Kotsifali is because this is all about the oak. Underneath, however, there is some structure here, grip on the finish and backbone. The mid-palate is quite elegant. This improved as it aired out, becoming more vibrant and sometimes piercing through the oak overlay. The texture became more caressing. There isn’t a lot of concentration, but it should drink nicely with another 6-12 months in the bottle. At the moment, it is too tight, but it should shed tannins fairly quickly. It may age a bit, but it likely lacks the mid-palate concentration to reward long aging, so let’s take that in stages. There were 5,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2019  (Apr 2014)

Karavitakis Family has been involved in the winemaking business for 4 generations already. The great grandfather was the owner of major vineyard and olive tree plantation around the area of Pontikiana village in Chania. Back then one type of red wine was produced from an indigenous grape varietal of Chania region: Romeiko, and also big amounts of Soultana raisins. With time vineyards were getting bigger and enriched with many more varietals. The business was expanding till today’s owner Manolis Karavitakis reorganized everything, built the new winery in 1996 just a few hundred meters from the old one and tried to focus both in local and international grape varieties. The result was a very rich portfolio of wines, together with limited production experimental ones. Today his son Nikos Karavitakis is running sales, exports and the winery tastings program and together they cooperate for producing and releasing wines which will offer a taste of the Cretan terroir. The winery’s philosophy is simple. Grow local and international grape varietals, but offer a cretan terroir background to them so that somebody can understand the essence of producing wines on the island of Crete. Modern viticultural methods are used and effort is given to apply minimum forces during winemaking. The result is wines without edges but yet very interesting for a tasting palate.
